Gran Canaria is often called “a continent in miniature”. The south of the island is warm, sunny and dry. Go on a trip to the mountains and you will see a totally different landscape. The north side of the island is green and lush and here they grow fruit and vegetables that is exported to the mainland.
Island in the sun
Gran Canaria is one of the most popular destinations for Scandinavians and Englishmen during the cold winter months. A great place to recharge your batteries and enjoy a week or two in the sun.
Before I visited this island the first time, I had an idea of a place with beaches and bars and lots of drunk Scandinavians. The first time I went there on vacation was the winter of 2003. And since then I’ve been there with my family at least once a year.

The southern part of the island has hundreds of bars and clubs that will satisfy your need for partying and fun.

What a cool looking weather widget that app is from yoWindow.com. When I first clicked on it, I thought it was a real scene from the bay, but upon taking a closer look, it seems more like a computer generated animation. First of all, the sail boats in the water move way to fast to be real. I get it, ok -it is primarily a module designed to give you a live weather update at Gran Canarias.
Haha….glad you got it:-)
It’s a beautiful place, but the lodging is not all good. Apartamentos Playa Feliz is definitely not a four star apartment as I were told when I booked. I had booked an apartment with sea view, but got an apartment with view over a noisy road. It was not easy to change apartment, but finally succeeded after some days. The pools have no heater. Rooms are small, however the beds are comfortable. Oh, and you must pay for internet.
I’m sorry you were unlucky with the lodging. Some hotels and apartments in Gran Canaria desperately needs a makeover. If you are planning a new trip, feel free to contact me, I might be able to help finding a better place for you!
This looks like an absolute gorgeous place to vacation. I was reading about the hikes that they have and some other things to do there but the scenery is the best. You mentioned that the weather there is perfect for Asthmatics does that mean that if you have really bad allergies it is a good climate for you as well? I would really like to move somewhere that I don’t need allergy meds.
Hi Dorothy, Thanks for stopping by. I am not a doctor, so I can’t answer that question. I would guess that depends on what you are allergic too. It might be worth checking out though!
